19th Century French Half Glazed Earthenware Cruche
About the Item
A charming and authentic 19th century ceramic water pitcher, or ‘cruche’, with top and side handles, and pouring spout. Originally a piece of utilitarian kitchenware, used for transporting and storing cold water, this wonderfully charismatic tall Provençal jug is half-glazed in the traditional way, and would have been buried in cool soil or sand to keep its contents cool. This beautiful piece of rustic pottery retains its original pale yellow colour, and is superbly aged and weathered.
