Charles Frederick Hancock Victorian Sterling Silver Salt
About the Item
An exceptional, fine and impressive antique Victorian English cast sterling silver salt made by Charles Frederick Hancock; an addition to our silver cruet and condiment collection.
This exceptional antique Victorian cast sterling silver salt has been realistically modelled in the form of two putto*/cherubs carrying a large basket using horizontal bar supports.
The surface is embellished with details reproducing the anatomical features of the putti, in addition to the naturalistic textures of the terrain beneath their feet and the woven texture of the vessel.
The salt retains the original hallmarked plain rectangular liner.
The base of the salt bears the retailer's mark 'Hancocks & Co, 39 Bruton ST, London'.
This versatile salt vessel is a substantial size and if required could be used as a match striker or standalone ornament.
In art and culture, a putto (plural: putti) is a chubby male child, usually nude and occasionally bearing wings.
Condition
This antique cherub ornament is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.
The cast ornamentation is all very sharp.
Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the base are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.
Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this Victorian cherub ornament.
