Set of Vintage French St Clements Oyster Plates

About the Item

A set of four vintage 1950’s French St Clements oyster plates in the treacle glaze. These plates were produced in the 1950's in the famous St Clement factory in France. They are glazed in a beautiful, rich treacle majolica, each plate holds six oysters and there is an indentation in the center to hold a wedge of lemon. The faience (Majolica) factory of St Clement was established in 1758 by Jacques Chambrette, who already owned another one in Luneville. With the second factory he aimed at the higher segment of the market with prestigious objects. The factory received because of this label as royal supplier for Marie-Antoinette's luxury chateau at the Trianon near Versailles. Over three centuries of creative excellence the factory has been home to many of the most famous artists: Cyffle', Bussiere, Lachenal, Emile Galle', to name a few. The factory is now a part of the Sarreguemines group and employs 130 persons. The St Clement factory is recognized as producing some of the finest Majolica in France. These plates are in excellent condition with small factory firing marks on the underside of each plate (which is normal in production). They are all stamped/impressed on the underside "St Clement" 4589, France.
