19th Century Apache Large Earthenware Pot
About the Item
Antique Apache Large Earthenware Pot, Second Half 19th Century, a very large hand molded clay spheroid vessel, a classic "Olla," with it's original rawhide netting. Since the Apache did not settle down as farmers or herders but rather remained primarily migratory hunters, they did not develop the highly evolved pottery or basketry traditions of the neighboring Pueblo peoples; their pots were typically like this one undecorated, and tended to be very large like this for carrying quantities of water and food on the trail. Similar pots were also made to some extant by the Navajo.
This piece came out of an old Adirondack lodge collection. The pot remains in very good condition, with no cracks, and only a few expected rim chips. The pot is held on an iron ring stand.
