Ditidaht/Nuu-Chah-Nulth Totem By Raymond Williams
Located in Coeur d'Alene, ID
Chief Shakes Raven pole by Ditidaht/Nuu-chah-nulth artist Raymond Williams. This finely crafted model totem pole is by Ditidaht/Nuu-chah-nulth master carver Raymond Williams, the father of the current generation of Williams carvers. It depicts an iteration of the Tlingit Chief Shakes pole of Wrangell, Alaska – a popular motif for the Williams family. The top figure is Raven’s Grandfather, who perched on the Box of Daylight. The middle figure is Raven, and below is frog. This model illustrates how Raven stole the sun, moon, and stars and released them into the world. This pole was probably made for Ye Olde Curiosity Shop in the 1950s. 27"
PERIOD: 1950s
ORIGIN: Seattle/Williams Family

Large Signed Native American Hopi Original Mudhead Kachina Katsina Doll on Stand
Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderfully handcrafted/detailed and decorated Native American Hopi Mudhead Kachina doll. Quite an unusually large work. A striking piece overall. Hand painted with leather and possibly turquoise (necklace) accompaniment.
Hopi katsina figures, also known as kachina dolls, are figures carved, typically from cottonwood root by the Hopi people. Initially, kachina dolls were made to instruct young girls and new brides about katsinas or katsinam, the immortal beings that bring rain, control other aspects of the natural world and society, and act as messengers between humans and the spirit world. The Mudhead or Koyemsi figure is viewed as a clown/joker figure who is responsible for laughter and entertainment at Hopi dances and ceremonial events. He plays drums and games to keep his audience engaged.
The piece is signed by the artist under the base.
From an extensive collection of Native American objects and artifacts. Would be a great addition to any Native American Art...

Mid Century Faux Argillite Haida Statue of a "Boston Sea Captain"
Located in Nantucket, MA
Scarce Vintage Museum Replica Faux Argillite Haida Statue of a "Boston Sea Captain," a cast resin piece made for Mystic Seaport Museum in the 1950s, a faithful copy of the 19th Century Haida carved argillite and whale tooth masterpiece in their collection.
Argillite is a naturally black fine grained sedimentary rock found in a few places in the Northwestern mountains and in the Haida Gwaii archipelago (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands) in British Columbia. The Haida began carving this "black slate" around 1800 principally for trade and sale to outsiders and it remains an icon of Haida artwork and their exclusive cultural property: the Haida have a cultural and legal monopoly on the mining and carving of argillite.
A sea captain from Boston chanced to stop along the Pacific Northwest Coast exploring for a source for furs to bring to China. He was successful (leading to Oregon's appellation as the Beaver State...
