19th Century French Figural Partridge Bird Cleaver & Herb Chopper

About the Item

A large rare antique 19th-Century French figural chef's cleaver or chopper in the form of a partridge bird, circa 1880. This fine quality cleaver exhibits excellent craftsmanship with a hand forged heavy steel full tang blade and the hand crafted handle has mahogany scales attached with brass and copper rivets. The blade has a lovely stamped steel pattern in the shape of a partridge bird with a copper eye. Often these cleavers were given as wedding gifts because they were not only beautiful to display, but they were also functional, used primarily to dice herbs. These old cleavers are very hard to find and rare to see in the form of a bird. It's a delightful piece of French Folk Art would make a charming addition to your kitchen decor or breakfast room.
