Iconic Rare 1st Edition Poul Henningsen PH 5 Chandelier Pendant Lamp from 1958

About the Item

Iconic rare 1st edition vintage PH 5 chandelier pendant lamp from 1958 in purple ( series 1 ) Purple was a very popular mid century color in Scandinavia. It was also the first color PH5 was produced in. And it is also a retro color that is making a comeback. Poul Henningsen designed this iconic lamp in 1958 and the launch was in September of that year at Illums Bolighus. This PH 5 is in unbelievable condition for its age and this model will only appreciate in value because it is so rare. This PH pendant has been dismantled cleaned and rewired. Please also notice the brass spacers between the shades. They have been stripped of paint and polished giving this iconic pendant that extra touch. Very difficult to find a nicer example from this year. The lamp has also been updated to a series 2 lamp which means that the cord is completely insulated and is not in touch with any metal and thereby not needing to be grounded. This iconic lamp will be packed responsibly for worldwide shipping. For peace of mind please take the time to see my reviews. Poul Henningsen is most associated with his design of the PH-lamp series of glare-free, shaded lamps His lamps used carefully analyzed reflecting and baffling of the light rays from the bulb to achieve illumination that was not harsh and glaring but shed warm, soft light. His light fixtures were manufactured by Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen, a company with which Henningsen would build a lifelong working relationship. His novel works of Danish modern designs are featured in many museums.

Wear consistent with age and use. This lamp is over 60 years old And although it is in great condition it has its original paint with age related wear and with slight nicks to the paint. There are no dents. And again for a lamp of this age it presents itself extremely well.

The trumpet-shaped top shade provides illumination of the area above the three lower shades, which primarily direct the light downwards. A base reflector and a blue glare ring protect against glare from all angles. The strongest light is directly under the fixture. The shades have a matte white painted finish to ensure very comfortable lighting. Poul Henningsen designed the three-shade system during 1925/1926. The first lights using the system were designed for an exhibition in Paris. His work with Louis Poulsen continued until his death in 1967. Throughout his life, PH sought to create glare-free lighting; aiming to direct light where it was most needed, and creating soft shadows while using incandescent bulbs as a light source. The four-shade system was launched in 1931 to create a fixture that could be mounted high up and serve as an alternative to the commonly used chandeliers. The PH four-shade fixture was designed to increase the amount of light emitted horizontally to provide greater illumination of walls and shelves than was possible using standard three-shade lights. It was removed from the Louis Poulsen standard range in the 1940s, but was redesigned in 1979 by Danish architects, Sophus Frandsen and Ebbe Christensen, for the Charlottenborg exhibition building in Copenhagen (although in a larger size: PH 6...
