1930s French Bronze Animalier Table Lamp

About the Item

Beautiful and elegant French lamp in the purest art deco style. Entirely made of bronze, it features a fine fabric abat - jour in shades of yellow-gold that harmonises perfectly with the extreme refinement of this superb decorative element. The patina, the style and, above all, the supreme quality of the chiselling, can attribute this beautiful lamp to the great French art deco bronzist Charles Artus. This artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important European private collection Every item of our Gallery, upon request, is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Sabrina Egidi official Expert in Italian furniture for the Chamber of Commerce of Rome and for the Rome Civil Courts. Charles Artus, born in Étretat on 16 July 1897 and died in Le Havre on 21 October 1978, was a French animal sculptor and engraver. A pupil of Édouard Navellier, then assistant to François Pompon in the 1920s, he was a member of the Salon d'Automne where he exhibited a lithographic stone entitled Écureuil and a bronze Pintade. He was a perpetual member of the Société des Artistes Français, where he exhibited from 1920 to 1927, winning an honourable mention in 1923 and a bronze medal in 1926. Until 1940, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. He was a member of the ‘Groupe des XII’, a group of animal sculptors united around the figure of Pompom with Pierre-Jean Jouve, Hilbert, Jane Poupelet, Lemar, Guyot and Bigot. The Artus studio at 212 rue de Vaugirard became famous, and Artus worked with the Edgar Brandt, Charpentier and young Bernheim galleries. He left Paris in 1940, to settle permanently in Etretat in a house-workshop designed by the architect Mauge in the manor house of Bligny. Charles Artus died in Le Havre on 21 October 1978. His works can be found in the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Musée du Louvre, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, the Museums of Vernon, Gien, Boulogne, Poitiers, Mont-de-Marsan and Philadelphia, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and in museums in Tokyo, Toronto, Ottawa and Luxembourg, among others.
