18th Century Italian Baroque Period Giltwood Mirror

About the Item

This exceptionally carved Baroque period Italian mirrored mercury glass giltwood wall hanging / mantel mirror captures the reason why we love European antiques so much. Nothing adds character to a piece like the time-worn, natural patina that only time can bring. Born in Italy in the 18th century, richly ornamented with hand carved and sculpted ornate acanthus reliefs, intricate foliate ornamentation, undulating scalloped pie-crust trim, bordering the solid gilt wood frame. Some areas of wear and finish loss add warm, rustic charm. Over the last approximately 300 years, the original mirrored mercury glass plate has developed a fascinating beautifully aged distressed patina, with scattered dark age spots, oxidation and various patinated imperfections, that does not detect from the display, but only adds to the aesthetic appeal and overall authenticity of this remarkable mirror. Dimensions: (approx) 41.25 High, 36" Wide, 3" Deep Provenance: The collection of oil magnate Jim Musselman. Musselman has an impressive track record of finding oil, leading multiple successful oil and gas ventures, including establishing Caelus Energy, JM Petroleum, founding partner of Kosmos Energy, Triton Energy, and various other oil explorations. He found accidental celebrity when he starred in the film Big Men, produced by Brad Pitt. Acquisition: J. Garrett Auctioneers had the privilege of selling the contents of Mr. Musselman's Dallas, Texas mansion. September 2021 catalog.
