Painted Louis XVI Style Canopy Bed

This large and attractive architectural piece is known as a pulpit canopy. Before the advent of microphones and speakers, orators would often address assemblies from elevated platforms known as “wine glass pulpits”. These podiums featured domed roofs called abat-voix, sometimes known as sounding boards, that would project sound outwards. Our walnut wood pulpit canopy is a fine example of such a device. Hand-carved and hand-painted in Italy in the 1700’s, our abat-voix is roughly octagonal in shape. Each of the sides have edges with luxuriously thick step molding, alternating between stained and gilded wood. Each of the corner cornices are adorned with gilded flower carvings, although some are missing. The interior of the canopy features a gilded open sun with sinuous rays emanating all around. Each of the sides are adorned with foliate margents surrounded by scrolls, again with some losses. All the edges are bordered with a thin layer of gilding. Dating to circa 1885, this set of four hand-carved parcel paint cabriolet armchairs are in the style of Louis XVI. The thick oval medallion backs (which have retained their original checkered canvas on the verso side) have been adorned with a trophy at the crest, featuring a floral margent tied to an arrow quiver by a twisted rope. Originally an overdoor from a boiserie room at a French chateau, this large architectural was hand-carved during the Louis XVI period, circa 1790. The overdoor is roughly rectangular, with the exception of the stepped bottom molding, which would have been necessary to fit over the door frame. In the center of the overdoor is a classical urn adorned with imbricated disks and gadrooning and topped with a pinecone finial. The vessel is surrounded by an ovate border embellished with bead and reel, an oval floret, scrolls, and foliage. Two bundled leaf swags emanate from the top of the medallion, flowing in opposite directions, with crinkled ribbon loosely twirled around the greenery. An additional crinkled ribbon is wrapped around the garland just before the swag feeds through a hoop and turns downwards. Prominent molding with several thick layers surrounds the low-relief carvings, providing a nice border to the architectural panel. The wood has been painted a grayish-green color, sometimes referred to as “French gray”, which is a very neutral color that can be paired with many interior color palettes. After the rediscovery of the ancient Roman cities, Herculaneum and Pompeii (1709 and 1738, respectively), Neoclassical themes became popular. During the reign of Louis XVI, these elements were often paired with themes from nature to form highly carved pieces of furniture, such as this antique clock case. hand carved circa 1890 from oak, the shapely clock is referred to as a demoiselle. The original finish has been bleached, allowing the supple curves and intricate carvings to gain prominence. A large white clock face with blue numerals can be seen behind a circular pane of glass surrounded by raised molding adorned with cordate leaf tips. Two carvings (one with a pair of flowers and the other with a fringed linenfold swag) embellish the bonnet, between a molded crown with a subtle arch and recessed galbee sides. This pair of brightly silvered bronze chenets are from France (circa 1900), in the style of Louis XVI, as noted by the presence of laurel leaf festoons and pots au feu finials. They were used in well-appointed homes, not only to decorate the front of the fireplace, but to prevent burning logs from rolling onto priceless rugs, should they break free of the fire.
