A Fine Model of a 19th C. British 24-Pounder Muzzle-Loading Smoothbore Cannon
About the Item
A finely cast model of an early 19th century British 24-pounder smoothbore muzzle-loading artillery cannon, together with its garrison style carriage.
Both cast in heavy gauge 'bell metal', the gun is accurately represented with the Royal Cypher of King George III, together with the broad arrow mark used by the Board of Ordnance, the underside bearing impressed makers marks MH.
Fitted atop a garrison style carriage bearing impressed marks 24 PR (for 24 pounder) and fitted with a sliding quoin for adjusting elevation.
These guns were intended for both naval & land use, and when used for shore-based fortifications & ramparts they were then fitted on a mobile garrison type carriage such as this. With it's long, slender silhouette & simplicity of decoration, the British 24 Pounder guns of the early 19th century were undoubtedly the most impressive of the smooth bore era.
Exhibiting an exceptionally warm pinkish hue as a result of the higher ratio of copper used in their composition, making this fine model much more closely associated with a form of bronze versus that of brass.
And as the name suggests, because of it's high quality, bell metal was used in the casting of bells as well as in casting items such as candlesticks and in some instances cannons.
Combined overall weight, 9 pounds.
