Calder: A Study of the Works of Alexander Calder by H. H. Arnason (Book)

About the Item

Alexander Calder is one of the world's best known living sculptors. He has achieved world-wide recognition as the artist who made sculpture move, and he is one of the few men in history who can lay claim to the creation of a new art form. His mobiles have fascinated everyone from children to philosophers and scientists. The wit of Calders art makes his appeal very nearly universal. This book, written by H. H. Arnason and illustrated with photographs by Pedro E. Guerrero is a critical Biography of the artist and his work. The development of Calder's mobiles and stabiles is recorded from their origins in the 1920's, down to the present time. His contributions to the major directions of modern art, and his relations with other leading modern painters and sculptors, are carefully traced and analysed. The text is the result of a close study of Calder's works and a personal friendship with the artist extending over fifteen years. Mr. Arnason initiated the great Calder exhibition which was held at the Guggenheim Museum at the end of 1964. and which was also shown at The Art Gallery of Toronto and the Musee National d'Art Moderne, Paris. The photographs by Pedro E. Guerrero have all been made especially for this book. They provide the most complete pictorial documentation of Calder's career as an artist ever to appear. The photographs let Calder's works speak for themselves; each piece of art is revealed as it relates to its environment, and from the point of view which best describes it. Also included are fascinating, intimate studies of the Calders in their home in New England and Sache, France, as well as many views of the artist at work in his studio. For those who are admirers of the sculpture of Alexander Calder, her is an enduring testament to the man and his work. 192 pages. Hardback. 1030 grams.
