Elan The Interior Design of Kate Hume
About the Item
Author Kate Hume and Linda O'Keeffe, Photographs by Frans van der Heijden
The first book from celebrated interior and furniture designer Kate Hume.
Kate Hume's passion for interiors stems from her lifelong love affair with color and her respect for anything artisanal. Color, light, and texture inform all of Hume's projects to create a distinctive style that is casually luxurious; bold patterns are expressed in rich, elemental hues. Though color drives her design schemes, it is never dominant. For Hume there is no wrong color, only wrong combinations.
Hume's inimitable approach to design favors tactile materials such as linen, grass cloth, silk, jute, and impeccably sourced homespun fabrics. Unabashedly mixing different furniture genres, Hume prefers vintage over brand-new, considering for instance the best dining tables to look as if they've witnessed countless lunches and dinners. That is why she and her husband and collaborator, Frans van der Heijden, design their own pieces from sandblasted wood and brushed timbers where signs of age already exist. Exquisitely employing beautifully crafted furniture, intriguing objects, engaging color schemes, and seductive, ambient lighting, Hume consistently demonstrates her mastery of eclectic, warm, and sophisticated design.

- Magical Rooms Elements of Interior DesignBy Rizzoli International PublicationsLocated in New York, NYKnown for her witty and whimsical interiors with a bohemian flair, Brooklyn-based designer Fawn Galli shows us how to create magical rooms ourselves without breaking the bank. Guided by her philosophy ""A room should awaken the senses,"" Galli's goal is to cast a spell with her interior designs. Galli's interiors are celebrated for expressing the deepest desires of her clients through storytelling layers of textiles, colors, and furnishings. In Magical Rooms, Galli shares her collaborative approach to show us how we can transform our inspirations into good design. Showcasing twelve very different interiors--from a Brooklyn townhouse to a Tribeca loft to a Greenwich Village apartment to an Upper West Side penthouse--Galli illustrates how she has achieved the finished look for each and breaks down her design principles into instructive teachings on scale, structure, balance, and color that readers can apply to their own interiors. Through the lens of her favorite rooms, Galli shares her own inspirations and tried-and-true tips, revealing how she distills her influences into five elements that she uses, in every project: Nature (bring the outside in); Clashing (a no-rules attitude); Surrealism (subverting the rules of scale and composition); Bohemian (worldly, chic, and eccentric); and Sparkle (the influence of disco sprinkled like fairy dust). Full of inspiration, ideas, and real-world design tips, Magical Rooms empowers us to dream and to create our own chic and personally meaningful interiors. About The Author Fawn Galli got her start in interior design working for Robert A.M. Stern where, among her many projects, she designed Mr. Stern's own loft and apartment. She went on to work with Peter Marino before eventually launching her own firm in 2007. Fawn's work has been featured in Elle Décor, Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, Lonny Magazine, Domino, New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal, among other outlets. Molly FitzSimons began her career as a style editor for Martha Stewart Living, and has since created content for dozens of lifestyle and interiors brands.
