Elvis Presley (1935–1977) was one of the most iconic and influential performers of the 20th century, known to his fans simply as "The King". As one of the originators of rock and roll, he created a music style which changed the world and inspired generations of artists from the Beatles to the present day. Presley remains the best-selling solo artist of all-time, with estimated record sales of 600 million, and performed over numerous styles including rockabilly, pop, blues and gospel. Today millions of fans flock from around the world to visit his former home of Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, and rare items of his memorabilia regularly sell for tens of thousands of dollars at auction. The most famous hair cut of all... At the height of his fame, Elvis Presley was drafted into the US Army, triggering an anguished outcry from his young female fans. Elvis spent three days at Fort Chaffee. It was there he received his famous haircut on March 25 1958. Not to miss a trick, Elvis' manager Col. Tom Parker had arranged for the press to attend the hair cut. The hair from this historic cut was passed to Elvis' close friend Gary Pepper to share amongst Elvis fan club members around the globe. Gary Pepper was the President of one of Elvis' first fan clubs, allowing him to amass a significant collection of personal effects gifted to him from Elvis himself. “Elvis who?” was photographer Alfred Wertheimer’s response when, in early 1956, an RCA Victor publicist asked him to photograph an up-and-coming crooner from Memphis. Little did Wertheimer know that this would be the job of his life: just 21 years old, Elvis Presley was—as we now know—about to become a legend. Trailing him like a shadow, Wertheimer was given unlimited Scope to get up close and personal with Elvis; even as the singer was seducing young women in dark hallways, he allowed the photographer to record his every move. Wertheimer took nearly 3,000 photographs of Presley that year, creating a penetrating portrait of a man poised on the brink of superstardom.
