c.1800 Portable English Orrery by W. Robinson

About the Item

c.1800 Portable English Orrery by W. Robinson The circular base is covered with a brightly decorated polychrome paper that shows the astrological houses, the months, visual displays of the orientation of the inclination of the earth throughout the year, and has a compass rose in the center. The brass planetary mechanism has two rectangular plates with shaped posts and spoked wheels. In the center and above the main axis is the polished sun while at the other end is the terrestrial system that travels the circumference of the base. Represented are the earth, which automatically adjusts the direction of the inclination based on the date. Rotating around the earth is the moon which rides on a tilted wheel that adjusts it for latitude and shows against an engraved silvered dial that shows the lunar cycle. The top plate is stamped 'W. Robinson".
