Antique Mechanical Raphael Tuck & Sons Paper Toy St Bernard and Calf
About the Item
Very rare, highly sought after and collectable Father Tuck's mechanical animals
The St. Bernard dog (Canis familiaris) No 1
and The calf of the common ox (Bos Taurus) No 6
Aren't these two the cutest paper toys you have ever seen.
They used to be in a box belonging to a set of six or eight animals. There are eight different series. Both of these probably belonged to series 1, Domestic Animals
These artistic, instructive and educative two-dimensional toy animals can be placed in hundreds of different life like attitudes. Obviously being toys, they have been played with. But bearing in mind they are made of paper, they are both in exceptional good condition.
Raphael Tuck and his wife started in London on October 1866, selling pictures, greeting cards and postcards. Their company was one of the most well-known in the postcard business of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Sadly during WWII the company headquarters, Raphael House, was destroyed including the originals for most of their series.
