Jaipur Splendor
By Assouline Publishing
Located in NEW YORK, NY
A delicate blend of old and new, Jaipur is a vibrant city full of energy, color and grandeur. With a history of maharajas, emperors and queens, the capital of the Rajasthan state has a prestigious heritage and an esteem that continues to this day. The City Palace, a sprawling complex of buildings and courtyards, is a testament to Jaipur’s magnificence and still acts as the home of the former royal family. The impressive and intricate Hawa Mahal, composed of pink and orange sandstone, helps lend Jaipur its nickname, “the Pink City.”
But Jaipur is more than just splendid palaces and enchanting jewels. The bustling bazaars, traditional handmade crafts and delicious street food truly embody the city’s dynamic spirit. Jaipur is at its most lively during the annual celebration of Holi, an ebullient “festival of colors” that heralds eternal love and the arrival of spring. Jaipur Splendor is a dazzling tour of this one-of-a-kind city.

Okitenugui Kabuto Samurai Helmet Shaped as a Head Towel Saika, Early Edo Period
Located in Milano, IT
Okitenugui kabuto
Samurai helmet shaped as a head towel
Saika, early Edo period, 17th century
The Haruta armorers who moved to Kii province in the early 17th century, took the name from the village where they worked, Saika, near Wakayama, possibly on request of the local daimyo, Asano Yukinaga, a great armour amateur. Specialised in the construction of plate helmets, they produced mainly two typologies of kabuto: one with six plates covered with a chrysanthemum-shaped plate on top and one shaped as a “head towel”, called okitenugui. The latter type of kabuto employs very heavy plates crafted in a curved manner and was improved in order to make it resistant to firearms.
This okitenugui kabuto features some distinctive decorations of the Haruta school, including the application of cut-out iron elements, including eyebrows, washers and lozenge-shaped decorations on the sides. The ring on the top, however, is a rare feature and could be used to hold a small war flag.

San Francisco Trolley Toy Friction Car. Japan, circa 1950s
Located in Incline Village, NV
San Francisco trolley toy Friction cable car; made of all tin; important to note because this was the first of it's kind having been made in the 1950s. They were all tin (no plastic); 7 1/4" long (not shorter); green (not red or multi-clored); "Bay and Taylor St" placard; #504" and most importantly the figures are actual FIGURES made of formed pressed steel and then hand painted and lithographed. Cheaper later models were simply lithographed into the flat sheet steel. Also, my example works (see video). It is a friction toy...
