19th Century Red and Blue Eagle Karabagh Rug
About the Item
Eagle Kazaks, named for the distinctive shape of their iconic palmettes, are some of the most highly admired and recognizable rugs from the Caucasus. In the course of the later nineteenth century and indeed into the beginning of the twentieth, rugs with this design were woven in increasing numbers across Karabgah and the South Caucasus to meet an increasing demand for them in both the Near East and Europe. A spectrum of quality exists within surviving examples, and this piece stands out well above the more common. A variety of Fine ornament from the repertoire of traditional Caucasian village weaving are drawn and placed across the madder-red field with care. The palmettes are individualized and conform to the flow of the composition. Slender finely articulated borders allow for greater emphasis on this bold and dramatic field.
