Antique Caucasian Soumak

About the Item

Soumak – Caucasus This is a beautiful rug made in the Caucasian Mountains that features a geometric pattern perfect for design styles ranging from classic to contemporary. The colours blend to create an elegant, rich and sophisticated look. This rug stands out among Caucasian rugs because it was created using a technique different from traditional rugs. Made using the Soumak stitch, a flat weaving technique is used instead of conventional knots, similar to brocade. Soumak rug’s distinctive design repertoire employs fine details and abstract, stylized design elements. This technique creates a carpet with perfect visibility for a dining or living room. It also has bold patterns that make it ideal for an informal setting. Soumak rugs are less numerous than pile rugs, making this a rare find and a magnificent piece for your home or office. The carpet is clean and ready for use. Soumak or Sumak is a type of rug that has a flat weave. It is made by passing the thread horizontally around successive pairs of warps. Antique Soumak rugs are unique because the wefts are used to produce the designs and not to be attached to the rug’s structure. The result is a flat, solid weave rug with exceptional durability. Unlike kilims, Soumak rugs are not reversible because the uncut threads are on the back of the carpet. Soumak comes from the village of Shemaka in the Caucasus, where this technique was widely practised. This weaving technique has been practised extensively throughout the ancient carpet-producing world, from Central Asia to Persia, the Caucasus and Turkey. Traditionally, these spectacular flatweave rugs are decorated with ancient symbols, small birds and geometric animals. As Soumak rugs were woven in different regions, their designs are diverse. Although they are pretty rare compared to pile rugs, antique Soumak rugs feature large medallions, finely executed repeating geometric patterns, and Persian garden designs surrounded by multiple sets of richly detailed borders. Antique Soumak rugs make excellent floor art, but this technique was also used to make bags, saddle covers, bedspreads, and other household items. Like other regional arts, antique Soumak rugs are highly decorative and diverse textile pieces, beautifying modern environments and softening minimalist interiors.
