Fine c. 1900 Tekke Main Carpet, Turkmenistan

About the Item

Tekke carpets are instantly recognizable for their distinctive stamped elephant foot patterns, even more so the early pieces, well known for their bold, visually arresting drawings.  Produced by the weavers of the Tekke tribes in Turkoman in Central Asia, Tekke rugs are highly sought-after for their high-quality wool and use of rich natural dyes, and are widely appreciated as among the finest weavings from the region. These pieces are truly timeless classics, well suited to decorate a wide variety of spaces. This example, dating to the turn of the 20th Century, boasts a remarkably fine weave and lustrous wool, lends a crisp clarity to its drawings. Being an earlier piece, it features fine, organic dyes, giving a soft madder tone to the central field, rather than the darker, saturated reds often found in later examples. Retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, with good pile throughout - its wide, highly decorative borders have been preserved on all sides. Its size is unusually large for a piece of its type and age. A charming tribal carpet, with the versatility to suit a wide variety of settings.

They are best known for their distinctive weaving style, in a region where most rugs produced by their neighbouring tribes can be recognised by their so-called elephant foot pattern and deep blues and reds. This 19th-century example features a pomegranate blossom motif, inspired by earlier weavings of the 18th Century, symbolising prosperity, longevity and fertility, with a muted aubergine grey field and a variety of earthy, vegetable-dyed colours in its design. Its weaving has a precision and clarity uncommon in carpets of its type - truly a carpet of one-of-a-kind craftsmanship and artistry. This Beshir carpet...
