Mid 20th Century Mongolian Carpet

About the Item

Though very few antique examples have survived, the tradition of Mongolian carpet weaving goes back many centuries, inspired in part by the designs of Chinese textiles, borrowing certain characteristic designs, including images of tigers, Buddhist motifs, and infinite knots, though set apart by their more dynamic, creative use of colour, and the exceedingly high quality of their wool. This carpet dates to the 1940s, and features a dragon design - often associated with water, thunder, and the power of nature - over a light silver-grey ground, and framed by a wide border. Despite incorporating traditional decorative motifs, it still has a distinct mid-century modern feel, with its restrained palette and open composition, well suited to a contemporary interior. This example is in excellent condition with a soft, lustrous wool. A unique and rare piece, to complement a tasteful setting.

  • Fine Early 20th Century Tibetan Carpet
    Located in London, GB
A unique and elegant Tibetan carpet in a rare room-size format - likely commissioned at the time for a member of the nobility, as most Tibetan pieces of the period were woven in a small rug format. The blue field provides a great contrast to the striking design, with each drawing in the central field is creatively repeated in various colour compositions, is framed by a simple red border. The charming array of hues in the palette are all vegetable-dyed. Rug weaving in Tibet stretches back hundreds if not thousands of years, though experienced a real renaissance in the early 20th Century, brought by the greater access to rich dyes, and a greater diversity in these carpets designs, combining traditional Tibetan motifs with elements borrowed from Chinese weavings...
