About the Item
The Chinese Nichols are among the most easily identifiable among the carpets produced in China in the first decades of the twentieth century. This specimen measure 409 x 303 cm and is knotted in a lustrous and silky wool on a cotton warp and weft. Walter Nichols was an American who in 1924 set up factories in Tientsin, North China, and has become world famous. The design is very open and modern, with minimal traditional Chinese elements as vases, plants, flowers, symbolic animals or objects of the everyday life. The main decoration in the field is arranged asymmetrically in opposite corners, lower right and upper left. Stunning colors the yellow turmeric of the frame together with the mild purple lavender of the field. The influence of the art déco style is evident in all the elements that make up this rug, a precious asset to a home.
