Fine Antique Agra Rug with All-Over Shrub Pattern on a Maroon Background

About the Item

Antique Agra rugs have historically been regarded among the most refined decorative carpets. They were commissioned by British nobility during the colonial period to adorn their castles and palaces. This finely woven, charming example, is distinguished by an exquisite maroon color for the background, as well as by its modular botanical pattern of polychrome shrub elements, which is originates from the court weavings of the late Safavid period. Agra rugs represent the pinnacle of nineteenth century Indian rugs, as they embody the classicism of Mughal iconography with a palette that is much closer to western sensibility. Agra carpets manifest the ideal syncretism of style, and for this reason they have been the first choice among interior designers since the nineteenth century. Together with the contemporaneous Ziegler carpets, Agra carpets have always been the trademark for noble and timeless quality.
