Vintage Small Moroccan Berber Azilal Rug with Niche Design

About the Item

The rugs from the Azilal region, located in the Moroccan central High Atlas, have been a relatively recent discovery. Distinguished by abstract, quasi-calligraphic patterns, Azilal rugs are characterized essentially by their floppy texture, which is closer to that of a flat-weave. The plethora of their design repertoire makes them among the most sought after Berber rugs among discerning collectors. Some of their patterns exhibit a striking modernity, others echo an iconography which links them to the earliest manifestations of the Berber people. This very sweet miniature example displays a very native rendition of the niche design or prayer rug pattern. The upper niche, which actually consists of four consecutive niche elements, differs from that on more formal prayer rugs for the child-like simplicity of its drawing, including that of the crudely rendered lamp hanging from the cusp of the niche, all the filler elements as well as the red niche present at the base of the rug, which resembles more the entrance to a cavern.
