Antique 1870s Persian Meeshan Malayer Rug, Wool, 5' x 7'
About the Item
This 1870-1880 Persian Meeshan Malayer rug consists of a cotton warp, handspun wool weft and hand-knotted handspun wool pile. Its vivid reds, oranges, pinks, and blues were all created using organic vegetable dyes. The cream, gold and taupe tones were also created using organic vegetal dyes, and work together create an overall soft and harmonious design. Meeshan Malayers, that is, Malayers created in the village of Meeshan, are renowned for their exceptional quality and highly sophisticated weave. They are a rare find, and what is especially unique to this carpet is the undyed camel wool background surrounding its central medallion. It is an improvisational piece, created from the heart by the weaver. The four points of the central medallion represent the four elements: earth, fire, wind and water. It is truly a special piece. The size is 4'6" x 6'5", and it is in excellent antique condition.
