Exciting Modernism in a 100 Year Old Antique Ardebil Perfect Condition

About the Item

Antique Ardebil 1920 Ardebil 1920 (Vintage) Exciting modernism: 100-year-old Ardebil Measures: 6 feet 8 inches x 4 feet 8 Ardebil was the birthplace of Shah Ismail who consolidated the Safavid Dynasty which urged and created the first golden age of weaving during the 16th and 17th centuries (based on millennia of previous weaving). It was a weaving center of distinction. Ismail and his descendants moved the capital to several other locations during the life of the dynasty, largely for reasons of security. Ardebil today has a comparatively small output of carpets, but pockets of great expertise remain, as exhibited in this absolute one-off piece. Classical Ardebils were centered on large, round central medallions, and usually of larger size, utterly different in pattern language. This is background only as to this unusual and exciting rug, which is of interest due to its more contemporary design and home appeal – it is clearly a departure from previous “traditional” or “classical “designs native to the city. In this piece the weaver/designer has very artfully "transmuted" or interpreted their own version of some Caucasian elements -notably the three central field back to back hook designs, and the lozenge figures in the inner border. ( Ardebil lies not far from present day Azerbaijan, the Caucasus). Borders! this piece has 7 which deserve your careful inspection. The widest central border has borrowed some pure Art Deco design features seen in the interlocking flattened pyramid shapes, and elsewhere in its angular lines. These features intermingle with the weaver's own take on some small Caucasian images- flower heads and birds for example. Have a close look. There is a great deal of handwork in this carpet, more than a year. The dyes are natural, and nicely mellowed : you can count no fewer than 10 distinct colours in this piece of art used judiciously by the weaver to create an overall cohesive piece of art for the floor. It is handmade, of course- which is evident from a close examination. This is a sturdy, tightly woven carpet which will give at least two generations of service in a medium -high traffic area. It will set off any appropriate environment, and-- is a very striking and unusual design, the likes of which we have never seen, from Ardebil or anywhere else across the greater Central Asian weaving area , nor in any modern interpretations. Its size and proportions make it a versatile addition to the home environment whether a smaller living room, den, study, breakfast room, foyer, bedroom, games room. This piece is offered at a special short term reduction to coincide with our launch on 1st Dibs. Its fair market value at " low retail price " is $4-5,000, given its excellent condition and uniqueness.

  • Antique 19th century Afshar , Perfect condition , Plush
    Located in WYNNUM, QLD
From a Boston Collector. Remarkably Creative. This is another of our small stock of Afshar collectibles which astonish as to their artistic form. This example was recently acquired from a Boston collector’s estate. The wool, very soft, is of excellent quality and the weave very fine, the rug in superior condition. Boston Antique carpet expert Michael Grogan declared it as one of the very finest and most original Afshar rugs he had ever seen. This piece was recently used along with two others in a lecture series which pondered the question of likely influence of tribal (and arguably other Persian e,g, Montasham Kashan) rugs on the development of Western 20th century painting. The abrupt break with traditional forms by a gifted female weaver in a remote location and in the throes of a nomadic life, considering her circumstances, is awe inspiring. The wide and in cases unusual colors deployed (note the dark browns probably achieved with walnut shells in the dye vat...
