Rare Antique Ottoman Perdeh Kilim Rug with Embroidered Carnations
About the Item
Perdehs were used as tent dividers by the Kurdish tribes of Eastern Anatolia. Each flat-woven wool panel is woven individually in a colour of choice, and is typically embellished with geometric motifs characteristic of the Kurdish tribal iconography. On this rare example, each panel is skilfully embroidered with stylised carnations, the latter being a decorative element characteristic of the arts of the Ottoman court. It may possibly be that this piece had been commissioned for a high-ranking officer of the Ottoman government, or for a Kurdish tribal chief wanting to incorporate an Ottoman emblem onto an object belonging to the traditional tribal material culture. The resulting combination of contrasting colours is another example of the strikingly unexpected modernity of selected examples of tribal textile art.
