About the Item
Understated Anatolian Accent Rug, c. 1900s
1.88 x 1.16 m
Anatolia, the western region of Turkey, has a long-standing rug-weaving tradition, dating at least as far back as the 13th Century. As the explorer Marco Polo once wrote, ‘Here they make the most beautiful silks and carpets, and in the most beautiful colours.’ It is these carpets, among the first to reach the European market in the Early Modern era, that can be spotted in many of the paintings of the Old Masters, including those of Holbein, Vermeer, and Reubens.
This beautiful example, dating to the turn of the last century, with an earthy colour palette and simple drawing. The unusual colour in the central field provides a complimentary backdrop to the monochrome overall design, framed by eight individual borders, the central band featuring a rare and charming rose-motif over an ivory ground.
In very good condition for everyday use, still retaining its order borders and fringes on all sides.
An exquisite rug, with a tribal charisma and personality, well suited to a stylish setting.

- 19th Century Oushak Accent RugLocated in London, GBThe weaving workshops of Western Anatolia, where Oushak carpets such as this piece were originally made, have a rich history, stretching back at least as far as the Early Modern era – as the 14th Century explorer Marco Polo once wrote, ‘here they make the most beautiful silks and carpets in the world, and with the most beautiful colours.’ During the 19th Century, these pieces were highly sought after in the West, inspiring many of the designs of European weavings of the period, and can be found in grand historic homes across the UK and Europe. This late-19th Century Oushak rug boasts a charming, warm colour palette, all in gracefully aged vegetable dyes, with saffron, salmon, and ivory tones over a light terracotta ground. The design employs scrolling floral and botteh motifs in the spandrels...Category
