MMF Rug 'Bruna Heden' (Brown Heath) Rölakan Flatweave Märta Måås-Fjetterström

About the Item

A spectacular vintage example of Marta Måås-Fjetterström's Bruna Heden (Brown Heath) design. The textile is a rölakan flatweave (same pattern on both sides) designed by MMF in 1931, and made by her workshop in Båstad, Sweden, before 1941. The composition of the carpet is made up, exclusively, of geometric shapes. The majority of the pattern is made up of diamonds with stepped edges. A variation of Greek key interjects along the longest sides and tetrominos complete the border along the shortest edges of the rug. Symmetry governs the shapes in the design, however the colours used to 'fill' the shapes are asymmetric in places. This creates a subtle complexity which gives the piece its' longevity regards appreciation. Signed MMF. In great condition and no stains or holes. The fringes have been replaced at some point.

Constructed with a pine kickboard, and a teak top, the legs finish with patinated brass shoes. The top is a slight trapezoid shape tapering at the front, originally to allow for serial desks to be attached resulting in a gentle crescent curve for a meeting room. A small circular recession, intended to be used to hold ashtrays, has its original petrol blue finish, popular with the two designers, and frequently used in their Copenhagen house constructed in the same year as this project. Today, this can be used to hold a pen pot...
