Armchair Pair, Folk Art Spool Chairs, Circa 1920s -1930s

About the Item

A pair of folk art armchairs crafted from maple wooden rods or spools used in the textile industry, plus stacked and turned wooden disks. The few similar examples I have seen of furniture created in this style were made in the 1930s. Elaborately detailed, each armchair features a heart-shaped negative space on each side, and a slot near the top of the back. The seats are a checkerboard pattern, almost 17" deep and 17" wide. The arms of the armchairs have a classic, elegant profile. Both glue and metal hardware were used to assemble the chairs, resulting in a pair of incredibly sturdy and durable armchairs that could actually be deployed into service at each end of the table. The chairs measure 41" tall, 23" wide, 19" deep, with a seat height of 17". Each chair weighs approximately 51 pounds. Every once in a while, I come across a similar chair or stool made in this fashion; but never a pair of armchairs. And in such extraordinarily fine condition for their age. Though the glue may have yellowed over time, it still locks the wood into place. The method of construction makes any necessary repairs down the road simple. Both chairs are signed on the bottom, but seemingly at different times.

  • Pair Folk Art Paintings on Wood Panel, 1980s, by Moses Tolliver "MoseT"
    Located in Southbury, CT
My uncle Bob was a country lawyer in rural Alabama and Moses Tolliver was one of his friends and clients. The pair of original paintings you see here were given to my uncle by Mr. Tolliver in exchange for legal services in the 1980s. Both the human figure and the snake were painted on scrap wood paneling and each has an aluminum beer pull-tab on the back for hanging. The works have been framed so the pull tab is not visible; if you prefer, simply remove the frames and both pieces will be as created. The snake painting...
