Coventry Cathedral Chairs, Dick Russell, 1960

About the Item

A set of six British oak chairs, designed in 1960 by Dick Russell for the rebuilding of Coventry Cathedral; a post-war project led by Sir Basil Spence following the near total destruction of the cathedral on November 14th, 1940 as part of a raid codenamed 'Moonlight Sonata'. Working as part of the Gordon Russell workshop, which championed design reform in Britain following the war and focused on commodity control furniture, Dick followed his brother's concepts surrounding design during the post-war period and the Arts and Crafts tradition that is embedded into the chair's manufacture. The design of the chairs showcases the narrow dovetail joints throughout, and each contain a tab-shaped backrest and angled seat with an opening in the back to provide a shelf for hymn books. The design has been featured across many churches and cathedrals around the world, like the Chapel of the Resurrection at Valparaiso University in Indiana, USA. Despite the cathedral's almost complete destruction, original typologies of English churches, like the foundations of the original cathedral itself, sit beneath these seemingly modern renditions of church seating. The chair's design stands as a symbol of longevity and resurgence, echoing the persistence of traditional British design in rebuilding churches following the Second World War.

The interplay of straight and curved lines within the chair’s design is very visually satisfying. The rhythm of lines is evident not only in the mahogany wood frame but within the leather too. The seat and back having a hammock construction mean the leather is allowed to bow naturally. The continuous curve that the back legs are carved into and the apron (wooden rail across the front) at the front of the chair both echo the exact arc of the leather hammock...
