Anglo-Indian Carved Solid Ebony Klismos Chairs, Set of Six, Ceylon, circa 1830

About the Item

A rare and exquisite set of circa 1830 Anglo-Indian, Anglo-Ceylonese, or Sri Lankan Galle District manufactured carved solid ebony dining chairs of neoclassical English regency klismos form, the gadrooned and reeded crestrails having central stylized lotus carved roundels connecting reeded stiles with open back support with stylized bellflowers and same stylized lotus carved roundels above chicly upholstered drop-in seats with tassel-tied tufted squab cushion tops and rounded reed-carved seat rail joining sabre form legs ending in original brass sabots.   • Condition:
    Repaired: Professionally restored. Some chairs with slight, non-detracting, non-imparing frame warping, typical of this form of chair from age and use. Very sturdy and heavy frames. Reupholstered. Wear consistent with age and use. Uniquely, the seats were never caned as is typical, always having upholstered drop-in seats; the upholstery is modern and the fabric of high quality and in excellent condition.
