Milo Baughman
Milo Baughman was one of the most agile and adept modern American furniture designers of the late 20th century. A prolific lecturer and writer on the benefits of good design — he taught for years at Brigham Young University — Baughman (whose often-scrambled surname is pronounced BAWF-man) focused almost exclusively on residential furnishings, such as chairs, sofas and benches. He had a particular talent for lounge chairs, perhaps the most sociable piece of furniture.
Like his fellow adoptive Californians Charles and Ray Eames, Baughman’s furniture has a relaxed and breezy air. He was famously opposed to ostentatious and idiosyncratic designs that were made to excite attention. While many of his chair designs are enlivened by such effects as tufted upholstery, Baughman tended to let his materials carry the aesthetic weight, most often relying on seating and table frames made of sturdy and sleek flat-bar chromed metal, and chairs, tables and cabinets finished with highly-figured wood veneers.
Like his colleagues Karl Springer and the multifarious Pierre Cardin, Baughman’s designs are emblematic of the 1970s: sleek, sure and scintillating.
As you will see from the furniture presented on 1stDibs, Milo Baughman’s designs for the likes of Drexel Furniture, Glenn of California and — for five decades — Thayer Coggin are ably employed as either the heart of a décor or its focal point.

- Set Six ‘Trieste’ Dining Chairs by Guglielmo UlrichBy Saffa, Guglielmo UlrichLocated in Chicago, ILCelebrate the ingenuity of Modernist Italian design with this exceptionally rare set of six dining chairs from the "Trieste" series, masterfully crafted by Guglielmo Ulrich in 1961. Manufactured by Saffa, Italy, these exquisite chairs stand as testament to Ulrich's design genius, embodying an innovative fusion of form, function, and craftsmanship. Named after the first prize it won at the Fiera di Trieste in 1961, the "Trieste" chair showcases its innovative and lightweight construction, paralleling Gio Ponti's famed Superleggera chair. It demonstrates a revolutionary use of lightweight wood and intricate craftsmanship, with solid mahogany construction and unique open dovetail joins in lamellar wood that effortlessly connects the legs and backrest together without the use of screws. These split joinery details, visible at each joint, add a unique design element, making each chair a statement piece. These chairs were produced in limited quantities, further enhancing their exclusivity and appeal to collectors and design enthusiasts alike. The set of six dining armchairs are in very good vintage condition, having been carefully refinished / restored by the previous owner. Each chair is upholstered with plush velvet - four in a soft moss green, and two in a dark emerald green, providing a stylish touch of color. The wrapped seats can be easily reupholstered, giving you the opportunity to customize the chairs to your taste! As light as they are luxurious, these "Trieste" chairs rival Gio Ponti's Supperleggera in their innovative use of lightweight materials, without compromising on comfort or stability. Guglielmo Ulrich (1904 - 1977), born into a noble Danish family in Milan, was a seminal figure in Italian design. His works were inspired by 18th and 19th century designs yet reflected a profound understanding of material and simplicity in form and function. His penchant for rare and exquisite materials, combined with an unerring eye...Category
