1930s Czech Chrome and Wood Armchair

About the Item

This Bauhaus-inspired Czech chair was once used in a modern office in Prague. During the 1930's, Czech artists, writers and furniture makers were inspired by modernist theories and experimented with new designs of every kind. The Bauhaus school in neighboring Germany was very influential, advocating for the adoption of modern industrial materials such as chrome tubing and plywood in the making of furniture. Czech workshops were very prolific producers of industrial seating, lighting and glass art. This chair is made from chrome-plated steel tubing mated to solid beechwood arms and beech plywood seating surfaces. The original color was probably black and has been changed to a historically plausible (and visually exciting) red lacquer. The original chrome frame is in fair condition with considerable abrasion, oxidization and pitting on the legs.
