Scandinavian Mid-Century Modern Sofa Upholstered in Bouclé, Scandinavia ca 1950s

About the Item

One of the most significant contributions of the Scandinavian countries to the European fine arts has been in the field of design. The Scandinavian countries have achieved world-wide renown by attributing a modern aesthetic to their traditional craft industries. Resulting from this were era-defining pieces with an unparalleled aesthetic dimension, such as this sofa. With its classic shape paired with modern design, the generous size, and fully upholstered body, this sofa is outstanding, even when measured to the many beautiful banana sofas created in Scandinavia during the mid-century era. The large, curved backrest follows the curve of the voluptuous seat, creating an inviting and open look. This shape is referred to as the ‘banana’ in furniture design, and is the perfect type of seating style to bring people closer together. From the back, the sheer volume becomes even more apparent, and it seems unlikely to be supported solely by the exposed, short conical legs. And yet, the solid wooden legs provide perfect stability and visual appeal. Wood is the most important material in Scandinavian mid-century design, and the luxurious light upholstery highlights and complements the beautiful colour of the wood. While most curved sofas of the era feature tufting and other forms of decoration, this model is free from unnecessary ornamentation, resulting in a sleek, elegant and modern look. Instead, taking the role of decoration is the fabric itself, with the bouclé forming waves running around the sofa highlighting its curves. Like the ‘banana’ style sofa, bouclé is a timeless trend with longevity that has and will stand the test of time. Bouclé pairs incredibly with curvilinear shapes, as demonstrated by this sofa. The effect resulting from the combination of these trends is stunning, a real visual treat to look at and to sit on, making this two-seater sofa a perfect accent piece. Around 1950, the Brooklyn, New York–born Stendig (b. 1924) worked for Raymor, a purveyor of modern china and accessories that is best known for distributing designer Russel Wright’s American Modern line of ceramics. While at Raymor, Stendig focused on the company’s less popular pieces that were made in Italy and Scandinavia, recognizing their potential for the American market. In 1955, he left the company and decided to establish Stendig Co. In 1956, the first Stendig Co. showroom opened in Manhattan. A year later, during a trip to Zurich, Stendig came across a Bauhaus–inspired furniture store featuring pieces by Swiss designers Kurt Thut, Hans Eichenberger and Robert Haussmann, the store’s co-owner. Following a meeting with Haussmann, Stendig became the retailer’s exclusive U.S. distributor. Throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, Stendig Co. imported and sold furniture...
