About the Item

19th Century small antique Biedermeier sideboard Southern Germany Walnut Biedermeier around 1825 Dimensions: H x W x D: 87 x 88 x 51 cm Description: Piece of furniture standing on block feet with two doors at the bottom and a head drawer above. The beautiful grain of the walnut is neatly mirrored and creates a strict symmetry on the front, sides and top panel. The ebony key plates in the shape of coats of arms, the blackened half-columns and a recessed ebony moulding in the edge area of the top panel provide accents. The drawer is opened with the help of a recessed handle. The recess is clearly visible in the picture, which shows the chest of drawers lying on its back. Behind the two doors are two large open compartments, which may have been used to store plates, bowls or glasses. Unlike a chest of drawers, the semi-cabinet, also known as a sideboard or sideboard, is therefore also suitable for storing bulky and standing objects. The drawer was probably used to store cutlery or table linen. Pieces of furniture like this were often placed between two doors or windows with their slightly vertical orientation. In an even narrower version and with a matching mirror above it, this type of furniture is also known as a trumeau cabinet. Condition: Refurbished and suitable for everyday use. The right-hand door was heavily "thrown". In an older restoration, the door was therefore slit several times on the inside to straighten the warped wood. This can be clearly seen in one of the photos. The last photo shows the piece of furniture as found.
