Antique Victorian Military Teak Secretaire Chest of Drawers C1840 19th C

About the Item

This is beautifully crafted antique early Victorian teak military secretaire chest of drawers, circa 1840 in date. The chest freatures two half width drawers over a full width drawer above a shallow drawer that is fitted with birds eye maple compartments and a hinged writing slope lined with a gold tooled black leather writing surface. There are a further pair of further full width drawers below, all the drawers are fitted with the original brass recessed handles. The brass-bound chest is in two parts, for ease of carriage, accented with inset brass hardware and raised on bulbous turned supports Add this splended military secretaire chest of drawers to any room in your home. Condition: In really excellent condition having been beautifully cleaned, polished and waxed in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 117 cm x Width 115 cm x Depth 55 cm Dimensions in inches: Height 3 foot, 10 inches x Width 3 foot, 9 inches x Depth 1 foot, 10 inches Campaign -era chests and secretaries were the travel items of British military officers who bought and commissioned them for their campaigns abroad to India and Ceylon (The Raj), indeed, the whole of the British Empire. The officers, being predominately from the upper classes, were accustomed to a certain standard of living and found it unthinkable to travel without their necessaries. Our reference: A3836
