Charles II Oak Chest of Drawers with Original Handles c. 1670

About the Item

A really good and original solid oak 17th Century English chest of drawers with bolection moulded drawers and original hand cast brass drop handles. The three long drawers with rebated runners and retaining their original linings of substantial oak boards with large strong dovetails and hand forged iron nailing to the side, ba boards and bases. The twin boarded top original also as are the fielded and framed oak panels to each side and the fielded framed backboards - these with tooling marks from the hand held aze. The four short stile feet beneath the lower plinth are replacements – the originals would have worn down over centuries of use, house moves and floor washing and so the short stile feet have been returned in oak in the last 50 or so years - normal and acceptable professional restoration on a chest of this great age and the work has been very sympathetically done and is not at all noticeable. The chest is very heavy with a beautiful ‘skin’ and with a really fabulous natural patination and rich deep colour. All of the drawers open and close smoothly and the chest has no significant faults or issues. An extremely handsome and early chest of drawers in excellent original condition, made with care and by hand in c. 1670 and a superb testament to its maker that the chest has survived, been used and loved by generations for 350 years and still remains solid, usable and in such beautiful condition. A superb example. Dimensions are: 36 inches wide, 34 inches high and 23 inches deep
