Milo Baughman for Directional Burled Walnut Sideboard or Credenza

About the Item

Milo Baughman for Directional Burled Walnut Sideboard or Credenza A beautiful burled walnut sideboard or credenza by American designer Milo Baughman (1923-2003) for Directional Furniture. This is a solid and well-constructed piece, with three cabinets, and doors that are mounted on piano hinges. Each of the six cabinet doors have brass handles. The left- and right-hand cabinets each have three open drawers, while the center cabinet has three closed-front drawers with brass pulls. The top center drawer is divided and felt-lined to make it suitable for storing tableware. There is a great deal of storage here! The entire front, top and sides of the cabinet are composed of walnut burl inlay. This is truly a stunning piece. Milo Baughman was a pioneer of modern design, and one of the leading modern furniture designers of the second half of the 20th century. Paramount to Baughman's design philosophy was that good design is enduring design. In 1947, Baughman established Milo Baughman Design, Inc. He did commissions for Glenn of California and Pacific Iron. He then created three collections for Drexel Furniture, followed by "The Milo Baughman Collection" in 1953 for Murray Furniture of Winchendon, Massachusetts. From 1953 to 2003, Thayer Coggin and Milo Baughman collaborated on designs that came to define mid-century furniture. He designed some iconic pieces during this time, including the 951-103 chair introduced in 1962, the 989-103 lounge chair introduced in 1963, and the 955-304 sofa. Baughman's uniquely American designs are forward-thinking and distinctive, yet unpretentious. The relaxed and timeless quality of his highly influential work continues to be collected, reinvented and reviewed by designers around the world.
