19th Century Irish Queen Ann-Style Library Table in Mahogany w/ Carved Scallops
About the Item
An exquisite Irish library table in fine mahogany dating from the first half of the 1800s in the Queen Anne revival style with exceptional carvings of rococo motifs. A long rectangular tray-board top embellished with coquillage or carved scallop motifs on the corners and the edges rests on a base with cabriole legs that end in hairy padded feet. Very well-articulated carvings of acanthus springing from the knees extend out beyond the corners to the sides, front and back with floating rosettes and acanthus foliage. On both of the long sides of the apron there is a cartouche, delineated by a carved rope motif and stems with acanthus leafs, whose centre has a carved peony or rose with buds and palmettes. The carving throughout is organic and very animated, a testimony to the seasoned artistry of a carver with great artistic merit and skill. While the serving board looks like a tray, it is secured to the base. Northern Ireland, circa 1830.
