American Early 19th Century Metamorphic Country Table Chair

About the Item

American Colonial metamorphic table chair in pine. This 48 inch round table was a practical answer to making two things for the price of one and making a small room more flexible. When one wanted to use a table for eating or working, the table top was rotated into the horizontal position. When one wanted to sit by the fire, protecting one's back from the cold draughts that were part and parcel of country homes in America, the table top would rotate into the vertical position making a chair with a tall back that could also be pulled nearer to the fire and the tall back would help to keep the sitter warm. Yankee ingenuity. This metamorphic table also had a little storage as the "seat" of the chair was hinged and would open easily to store small objects. This table started off 48 inches round, but over the past almost 200 years the boards have shrunken across the grain so it is now 46 3/4" in one direction, 48" along the length of the boards (wood does not shrink in length, only in width). The top is removable which makes transport and placement much easier, the colonial craftsman was nothing if not practical. Circa 1830.
