About the Item
This unique artwork by David Ordoñez, El Baile del Venado, depicts two celebrants in Deer costumes performing a folkloric and spirutual dance of the Mayans of Guatemala and Yaquis people of Mexico. Framed.
Measurements: 23 inches wide x 25.5 inches height x 3.5 inches deep
This Mayan ceremonial dance that probably was performed prior to going on a stag hunt and asking for forgiveness from the gods for the killing of deers, a sacred animal to the native people. It describes the life and death of the sacred animal.
David Ordoñez (b.1951) is a multi-talented Guatemalan artist that gets his inspiration from the traditions and folklore of the indigenous Mayan culture. His works frequently depicts the vibrant colors and intricate patterns of the textiles that still differentiates native groups and also conveys the social status of the subject.
David’s technique in this artwork is litography on paper over masonite and subject matter worked by applying, by hand, lacquers and varnishes creating the 3-dimensional image. Lovely piece of art.
Condition: Very Good. No issues. Frame in very good condition.
Signed on lower leg of one dancer: david ordoñez 1970 (?) venado Guatemala. Paper label on back with work’s information.
