18th-19th Century Watercolor Coat of Arms of Company of Merchant Taylors

About the Item

18th to 19th century framed watercolor Coat of Arms of the Company of Merchant Taylors of the City of York. A guild of freemen since 1273, Charles II granted them a royal charter April 26, 1662. This watercolor coat of arms now in an antique maple frame. It likely hung in the taylor shop of a guild member. The arms are supported by camels (carriers of the silks from the East), the motto is Unity Makes Strength. The ermine lined robes & tent signify royal patronage & the lamp atop wool.
