"Couple with Apples", Swedish Copy of British Masterwork

About the Item

Charming and lovely, this quiet depiction of two young lovers sitting under a tree in 1942, while World War II was being waged not far away, was painted by G. Lundgren in Sweden and is a close copy of "Amity" by Bernard Fleetwood Walker, owned by the Walker Art gallery in Liverpool, England. The original is well known and was painted in 1933. The young blond female figure is shown with a basket of apples at her side, in a pale blue dress and handing a daisy to her male companion. The male figure is shown in an oversized white shirt and a fedora in his hand, and in the background is a pastoral scene with fields, a farmhouse and hills in the distance. Nothing is known about the painter. The medium is oil on canvas. (Dimensions include frame.).

  • "The Entombment of Christ, " Fine Copy of Titian Masterpiece, Oil on Canvas
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
Beautifully painted, probably in the 19th or early 20th centuries, this copy of the famed "Le Transport du Christ au Tombeau" painting by Titian (Tiziano) in the collection of the Louvre in Paris, was recently found in the attic of a Hudson Valley monastery. The Louvre original, considered an early painting by the master, dates to the same period as his famous "Pastoral Concert" and shows the strong influence of Gorgione. This scene depicts the collaborative efforts of Joseph of Arimathea, Saint John and Nicodemus as they moved Christ's body from the cross to his tomb, watched by the two grieving Marys -- his mother and Mary Magdalene. It is not known who painted this copy, though of course artists over the years have copied the great Master paintings...

  • Qing Dynasty Chinese Painting of a Royalty Related Couple with Dragon Motifs
    Located in Yonkers, NY
A Chinese late Qing Dynasty period framed painting from the early 20th century of a royalty related couple with dragon motifs painted on a linen canvas. Created in China during the late Qing Dynasty in the early years of the 20th century, this custom framed painting depicts a couple wearing either a red (a symbol of luck in China) or green robe. The depiction of dragons relates them to the Imperial family, but having four claws and not five as codified, the couple is likely part of the royal family, not the Imperial couple themselves. Accented with typical motifs such as bats, flaming pearls and rain-filled clouds, the robes are filled with symbols. Wearing ornate headdresses, the couple is sitting on elegant chairs. Set inside custom made frames, the paintings show great signs of age. While the entire piece measures 40.5"W x 1"D x 53"H, the painting itself is 36.5"W x 49". With its vivid colors and interesting subject, this Chinese Qing Dynasty painting...
