Part of the public information effort during World War I involved enlisting people at home to do their part. Here, Penfield asks American women to save wheat. The surplus would then go to French civilians. While similar in graphic tone, dimensions, and composition to the accompanying Y.W.C.A. poster, Penfield’s emotive force is dramatically different here. “They are struggling against starvation and trying to feed not only themselves and children: but their husbands and sons who are fighting in the trenches.” from “Food Saving and Sharing: Telling How the Older Children of America May Help Save From Famine Their Comrades in Allied Lands Across the Sea”
