Antique Print of the Hackney Horse by O. Eerelman, 1898

About the Item

The lithograph of the Hackney Horse from the Dutch edition of "Paardenrassen Kunstalbum" is a splendid piece of art, meticulously crafted to showcase the elegance and agility of this esteemed breed. Part of a luxurious portfolio comprising 41 lithographed plates, this particular print draws from the masterful paintings of Otto Eerelman, an artist celebrated for his dynamic and detailed depictions of horses. The Hackney Horse print is produced on a heavy textured paper that provides the feel and visual impact of a hand-painted canvas, thereby enhancing the viewer's experience of the artwork. With the dimensions of the sheet and image both being 59 x 44.5 cm, it stands as a significant work, intended for the discerning collector or to be displayed as a centerpiece in sophisticated settings. Issued by Schillemans & Van Belkum out of Zutphen, the Netherlands, the publication of "Paardenrassen Kunstalbum" began in the late 19th century and was distributed in segments to a clientele appreciative of equine beauty and artistic craftsmanship. The lithographs within this rare and opulent collection were produced by J.L. Goffart, a distinguished Belgian lithographer whose technique captured the nuance and vitality of Eerelman’s original art. Eerelman, born in Groningen in 1839, initially painted historic scenes but gained substantial acclaim for his animal portraits later in life, especially those of horses, which brought him commissions from the Dutch Royal Family and other notable patrons. His work embodied the grandeur of the era and resonated with the aesthetic sensibilities of the upper echelons of society. The narrative accompaniment to the images was provided by E.A.L. Quadekker, a military veterinarian and knowledgeable author on equine matters, adding depth and context to the visual feast. His expertise offered an authoritative backdrop to the lithographs, marrying art with education. This Dutch edition, noted for its grandeur and excellence, surpasses the smaller-sized editions produced in Germany, France, and the subsequent facsimiles. As one of the most prestigious horse-related art collections, it captures the Hackney Horse with a fidelity and splendor meant to grace the finest collections. Due to the delicate nature and size of the print, it is shipped flat, ensuring that it reaches its destination in impeccable condition, ready to be admired for its artistic merit and historical significance. Extra shipping charges may apply, varying by the region to which it is dispatched.

By PRINET René François Xavier (1861-1946) René François Xavier Prinet (1861-1946) Manon, 1898 "René François Xavier Prinet (31 December 1861, Vitry-le-François – 26 January 1946, Bourbonne-les-Bains) was a French painter and illustrator who drew his subjects from middle-class society. He was born to Henri Prinet, an Imperial Prosecutor in Vitry-le-François. A promotion led to him being posted in Paris, where they lived in a home not far from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. His father painted as a hobby and was supportive of his desire to study art, having him seek the advice of Louis Charles Timbal [fr], a well-known church painter and friend of the family. Around 1880, he began his studies in earnest, in the studios of Jean-Léon Gérôme; remaining with him until 1885. That year, his painting "The Infant Jesus" was accepted for display at the Salon. This was followed by studies at the Académie Julian. At this time, he also became associated with a group of young artists known as the Bande Noire (Black Stripe), which included Lucien Simon, André Dauchez...
