Large Antique Print of Chono Ca Pe, an Otoe Chief, circa 1838

About the Item

Steward of the Plains: Chono Ca Pe, An Otoe Chief This is a hand-colored lithograph of Chono Ca Pe, an Otoe (often spelled Ottoe) Chief, taken from the "History of the Indian Tribes of North America," which features works published after Charles Bird King circa 1838. The Otoe tribe, indigenous to the Midwestern United States, originally lived in the Great Lakes region along with other tribes that spoke Chiwere, a language belonging to the Siouan family. Over time, they migrated west, settling in what became Nebraska and Iowa. Like many Native American tribes during this period, they faced immense pressure due to the westward expansion of European-American settlers. In the portrait, Chono Ca Pe is depicted with a striking feathered headdress, which includes a red feather standing upright, symbolizing his leadership status. He wears a necklace of large beads, possibly indicative of his rank or achievements, and a fur draped across his shoulders for warmth and possibly as a sign of his role within the tribe. His face bears the distinctive marks of tribal identity or status. Such lithographs serve as a significant historical record, capturing the visage and regalia of leaders like Chono Ca Pe, as many Native American tribes did not have a written language to record their own histories at this time. Portraits like this one are invaluable for the cultural and personal details they preserve.
