"Rough Shooting" First Edition Antique Engraving by Douglas Adams, circa 1893
About the Item
This is a first edition print of Rough Shooting, signed by the artist, Douglas Adams. The print was published by Thomas McLean and depicts a highlands shooting scene. A group of hunters are huddled together in the foreground of the print, with one standing hunter aimed to shoot a bird. An epic, misty, and expansive landscape extend before them.
Douglas Adams (1853-1920) was a London based landscape painter exhibiting at various galleries between 1880 and 1904. He showed many times at the Royal Academy between these dates, as well as at the Society of British Artists, the Grosvenor Gallery, and the New Gallery.
Adams specialized in Highland landscapes, often including sporting elements in his paintings. During the late 19th century, a number of his paintings were published as limited editions, mainly by the well-known publisher Thomas McLean. Over his career, Adams executed about a dozen shooting scenes, including a couple of stalking images, and about the same number of angling scenes. These prints were issued in large photogravure format or as smaller sets of three.

Douglas Adams
Douglas Adams exhibited in the Royal Academy between 1880 and 1894 and also shared a Primrose Hill studio with other artists. He specialized as a landscape and wildfowl painter and very often painted sporting scenes. Many of his paintings are of field sports, including hunting, shooting and fishing, as well as other landscapes painted in the Victorian tradition. Due to the success of his paintings, Adams worked with the well-known publisher Thomas McLean to create limited edition prints of his more popular painted scenes.
