Exotic Chinese Eight immortals sterling link bracelet ca 1930s The rare artisan bracelet is designed with thin bone veneer hand painted tiles set in sterling bezel links The eight immortals derive from Chinese mythology possessing the powers of giving life, destroying evil, enhancing wisdom; healing and longevity The eight immortals are embellished with hand painted figures with light surface carved detail. They are inset in sterling heart shaped bezels visible on the back underneath side The first immortal is Chung-Li Chuan: Considered the chief of the immortals; he carries a fan or peach said to have discovered the elixir of life; posses the power to cure the sick and revive the deceased He is the symbol of longevity The second immortal Chang Kuo-Lao is represented as the 'Old Man' He carries a bamboo tube considered the symbol of wisdom helps with fertility The third immortal is Lu Dong-Pin. He is a Taoist scholar with a magic sword to slay demons and evil spirits He is noted for curing illness. This immortal symbolizes scholastic luck and protection The fourth immortal Ts' ao Guao-chiu He is the finest dressed immortal with a tablet of admission to court and sometimes depicted with a fan.
