21st Century Sterling Silver Brooch Polychrome Enamel Marcasite
About the Item
Master goldsmith Detlev Volckmann was born in 1949 in Essen, Westphalia. He started his apprenticeship in 1966 by Alfons Mock in Essen. He graduated in 1969. He worked for the New York and Düsseldorf based jewellers Schmitt & Steib before obtaining his master degree in 1971.
Although in Germany the use of lower grade silver is more common, Detlef Volckmann told me that he uses silver of sterling quality because it brings more intensity to the enamelled colours.
This brooch celebrates lines, colours and movement. It was specially made for the artists mother who wore it daily until the age of 102. The opaque enamel with transcendent shades of green and blue, the nautilus shape and the wavy lines set with facetted marcasites are reminiscent of the deep ocean. The brooch is signed on the reverse
with the initials VD.
